Maverick's Guide to Choosing a Goose
So it's no secret that college guys will hit the bars on the hunt for a girl during spring break, the secret is to have a skilled wingman at your side to make sure you make out at the end of the night rather than strike out. A good wingman knows no bounds; he will do everything in his power to make sure you're not blocked from your target girl.
When choosing a wingman, make sure he's your equal. Don't choose a wingman who is much better looking than you, more charming than you, and so on or you may suffer from wingman reversal.
More often than not the best wingman are guys who already have girlfriends because he has nothing to lose - he's in a relationship, not out there competing with you - so he's happy to help you. If you don't have a suitable taken friend to make a wingman, an unselfish single buddy can be substituted to back you at the bar...
So for all you "Mavericks" out there, here are a few things to look for when choosing a "Goose".
Goose Understands His Mission
If you approach two attractive women, a good wingman will let the Maverick choose which one he want's, keeping the other one occupied. Goose's interest in her is irrelevant (heck, he might even have a girlfriend); he'll act like he's interested and not only distract the friend sustain the other girl's interest while you work her friend - not allowing her to get bored and urge your choice girl to move on.
Goose Keeps You Presentable
The good wingman acts as your personal hygiene helper for the night, letting you know if there's a booger hanging out of your nose or toilet paper stuck to your shoe. He'll give you the heads-up if your breath is bad or if your deodorant is wearing off. He'll also make sure that you don't drink too much and start acting like an idiot - not allowing you to be marked as "that guy" for the remainder of the night or in the worst case, the week!
Goose Understands Your Language
Choose someone you've already been in the trenches with - know your wingman well, and be sure he knows you well, this way you don't have to talk to communicate about everything... He can read your body language, signs and codes, and respond accordingly to help in any situation.
Goose Prevents Interference
More often than not if you're interested in the girl there's usually another guy trying to work the same hot girl that you're trying to impress. Or sometimes her "friend" will be doing all she can to make sure your target moves along without you.
Preventing the block is his only job at this point. He'll run his own interference by engaging, at close range, the meddling guy or girl with whatever weapon he has at his disposal (maybe he's a good joke teller, or will offer to buy a drink for the meddler to remove them from the equation). We DO NOT suggest your wingman might get in his way physically and box him out, so you can move in, this may cause physical damage to your face or his...
Goose Reads the Situation Constantly
The good wingman knows whether to enter the conversation when your stumbling through it to help you get your foot out of your mouth and when to just back off and let you do your stuff. He senses whether you're barking up the right tree and when you are simply wasting time on a girl who is simply not interested - and lets you know what he senses.
Goose Goes All Out
The good wingman will prepare himself to act-a-fool if necessary for his - he takes his role seriously and will stop at nothing. He has no fear of getting shot down, either physically or mentally, he will stop at nothing to create a scene or a situation that allows you to get next to your choice girl.
Goose Takes On The Ugly Friend
The good wingman will do anything - even he will even "take one for the team". He will purposefully engage the ugly friend with whatever necessary means, providing a ample time and cover while you chat up the hot girl.
Goose Boosts Maverick Up
The good wingman is your coach for the evening, encouraging you with positive and motivating talk - in essence boosting your confidence... this starts before you even head out for the club, he make sure you're looking (and smelling) good and that you know it. He may even buy some chick a drink and get her to hit on you by saying that its your first night single again and you're a little nervous... whatever it takes to get you on top of your game for the night - your wingman will do.
Goose "Wings It"
Nothing ever goes just the way you want, so... even after doing all his homework and thinking that he's got this wingman thing down... he's just making it up as he goes! Don't be too hard on him.
So......
Now that you Mavericks are filled with the knowledge of traits that make a good wingman make sure you recruit the right Goose for the mission... Be thankful for his help and always keep in mind that you might have to return the favor and be your buddy's wingman one night!
